Friday:

More Coffee Co (Melton): James Joyce’s Closed Mike Session James’s Band and Students 6.30pm

James Joyce: I do quite a lot of teaching around the area and I run a session once each month only for the people I teach, hence the name Closed Mic. We were based at Eye Kettleby lakes but we're now running at Mark Cook's More Coffee Co . We have one coming this Friday starting at about 6.30The Closed Mic Session is now in it's Sevent year and continues to serve up some great music. Why "Closed" you may ask and the answer is simple. I set it up only for the people I teach to give those who wish a chance to perform, with a full PA set up, in public, for family, friends and anyone who rambles in. This is the very best way to build up confidence in your own playing, to get used to the pressures of performing and to work towards playing in groups. All styles of music are welcome and all abilities once you have a minimum of three songs or instrumentals. They alternate the session each month between the Whipper Inn in Oakham and More Coffee Co in Melton Mowbray.

So the way it works is this:

If you would like to take part I will ask you to pick three songs (any songs) and to play them for me in class. I don't expect perfection but I do insist on three finished pieces, your very best work. We can then work them in class until we're happy and ready to perform. Once that's sorted I will book you in on one of our evenings. What you can learn from this experience is the discipline of gigging. That means having your music and your instrument ready, approaching the job in a professional way and learning to cope with different sounds, different venues and a bunch of strange people looking at you. My aim is to keep it all very relaxed and friendly but we still have to do the job.

I try to set up a Session once each month, on a Friday, but I have to keep it flexible due to our gigging commitments and other events at our two venues.

So each month I will put out the word through our blog and email newsletter and then it's up to you to mail me back if you'd like to play. I will then put a programme together to give the maximum number of players a chance to perform. I will try to give priority to new players but you can ask as often as you wish. I will try to fit you in, (if you're the only one who mails you get to do the whole night!).

You'll find the details on my site www.jamesjoyceband.com.

‘Chris Duckett’ is a talented solo artist hailing from Market Harborough. He has been gigging and busking over 10 years and his style is reminiscent of John Butler, Newton Faulkner with bits of roots reggae and blues chucked in. He is quite well travelled having journeyed through China, India, Canada and Australia, picking up all kinds of inspiration and world music influences on the way. His engaging, honest songs and percussive playing make him very engaging to see live. His debut EP 'Positive Vibes' is out now with another soon on the way.

The Noels Arms: ‘Slither’ Pete Minger’s Party 9.30pm

These guys are a slick outfit that really mean Business, putting the R. O. C. K into Rock! The whole stage is rammed pack with lights, kit and Rock-Blokes. With a set list that reads like a  Top Gear Rock Compilation. These Boys are most certainly “Back in Town”. Slither is the reunion of five experienced Musicians who decided to break the boundaries of the Cover band experience. Aiming to bring a High standard Live quality with full Light Show, Big Power Sound and Rock attitude. Playing a large selection of Famous Rock Songs and some other known, but not played often. So, if you want a Rock night to remember...Get Slither!

I’m reliably informed by Jo that Friday is Pete Minger’s Party, the Pub is still open for Slither fans to come along. Note the later start too! (No Early doors …….don’t worry Kelly Deacon reminded me that there’s a Jukebox :) x

The Generous Briton (Genny B): ‘Sweet Thief’ 9.30pm

‘Sweet Thief’ are back to ‘Hit you with their Best Shot!” Rocking the Genny B with Covers ranging from Heart, Whitesnake to Maiden, Dio and Lacuna Coil. So if you fancy a bit of Joan jet, Pat Benatar, Heart, Alanis Morrisette.... the list goes on, then come and join them ... promise you won't be disappointed!”

I caught the guys last time around, Sweet Thief are hitting covers that most bands would not. ‘Holy Diver’ by Dio for instance, the last time I heard ‘Stargazer’ was on LP! Dio too come to that. How many female vocalists can take on a Coverdale and win? Loved it, loved it, loved it! So if your ‘Living after Midnight’ I’d get down a tad earlier, to get a your ears to hear a consummate Rock Band.
